Common Questions

Class Information

Do I need a dance partner to join?
No, bringing a partner is not required. We regularly swap partners and roles, so you can dance with anyone you choose.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and makes you feel good. Feel free to express your style and you can underdress or overdress as much as you want 👯
What kind of shoes do I need?
Any comfortable shoes that don't grip the floor too much. Any comfortable sneakers should be fine. If you really want to invest in a a pair of starting up shoes, here is our recommendation for an affordable pair: nagardancingshoes.co.uk
Can I join mid-term/mid-month?
You can join our classes anytime! If it's your first time, we'll make sure to have someone help you out during the class. We encourage you to come to the classes, but it's more important to stay for the practice sessions. This is where you can get as much 1 on 1 support as possible.
Do you switch partners?
Yes! And even better - we switch roles too! We teach both leading and following from day one. We believe switching roles and partners helps you understand the dance better and makes you a more versatile dancer. Plus, you get to meet everyone in the room, not just the opposite gender/role 😉
How do I become part of the community?
Come to prácticas, stay for after-class socials, attend milongas even if just to watch and chat. Don't be shy to ask questions - we all started as beginners!

Experience

I've never danced before. Can I still join?
Absolutely! We will do our best to support you. We encourage you to come to the classes and also stay for the practice sessions. This is where you can get as much 1 on 1 support as possible.
How long does it take to learn tango?
Tango is a journey, not a destination 🤪 You can start enjoying dancing within a few weeks, but there's always more to learn and explore.
What skills will I learn in the first month?
In your first month, you'll learn how to connect with a partner, walk together musically, understand basic tango rhythm, and how to combine the basics into your own improvised dance. Most importantly, you'll start developing your awareness of the music, your partner and the other couples on the dance floor.
Is age a factor in learning tango?
Our community includes dancers from 16 to 60+ and everything in between and beyond! Each person brings their own life experience to the dance, making our community richer and more diverse.
How do I know when I'm ready for milongas?
You can start going to milongas after your very first class! Just let us know you're interested, and we'll walk you through the social codes, introduce you to friendly faces, and make sure you feel comfortable. We love taking new dancers to their first milonga and helping them become part of the community.
How far can tango take me?
Pretty far! Once you catch the tango bug, you'll discover a whole world of tango tourism! Many dancers travel to festivals and marathons around the UK and Europe. Some even plan their holidays around tango destinations like Buenos Aires. We can help you connect with tango communities wherever you go - it's like having friends in every city!

Besides the physical journey, tango often becomes a path of personal growth - you'll develop social confidence, body awareness, and emotional intelligence as you navigate different dance situations and connections. It's as much about discovering yourself as it is about discovering new places!
